I will use 2nd for the C# and/or 1st for the D if intonation or a particular fingering pattern makes it sound better or feel easier. For me, the K.I.S.S. principle applies here. Sometimes it'll be easy to slide up to a flat High E. High E: for me, this note actually sounds more centered and in tun with 12 fingering rather than open.
