The name fortification spectra comes from the visual appearance that resembles the battlements or walls of archaic fortresses. Metamorphopsia is the distortion of visual images in their size, shape, and color. Many variations occur, but scintillating scotoma usually begins as a spot of flickering light near or in the center of the visual field, which prevents vision within the scotoma area.
