There was always the old trick about a #2 pencil fitting between the bores inside the water jacket when talking about which 396's can be bored to 454 size. If the pencil fits between the bores,the block is too thin,if you cant fit it,the block should take the bore.

As explained to me.......this was a dual purpose block...396 or 427. I'm thinking later in '67 GM went away from this format. Clear as mud? Not only can those blocks safely be bored to build a 427, they can be bored over size after that. It is particularly common with the early blocks that did not have a groove in the rear cam bearing bore. WebApr 28, 2015 · The 396 in 71 was actually a 402 BTW. It was a .030 factory overbore. 396 +.060 pistons aren't hard to find. Or, use 427 pistons. I picked up a set of factory TRW forged stock bore, new in box, for $285 on Ebay. Sonic test the block. If it's worn out, then it's probably junk. I put 100k miles or so on the 60 over 396 I had in my old pickup. 400 hp is easy, 500 hp not so easy. Yes but you could hit 435-450 with modern heads.
